Tofu Sesame Sate with Peanut Sauce

So my husband says these taste exactly like chicken!! I guess that’s a good thing! Rectangles of tofu are loved up by a savoury marinade before being dredged in arrowroot flour and black sesame seeds. Tofu strips are then baked and threaded on skewers before serving. Dunked in peanut sauce, they are equally delicious served cold which makes them the perfect addition to any backyard BBQ. I really love using a sprouted tofu by Wild Wood. Sprouting the soybeans before making into tofu makes this product superior nutritionally and easily digested!

Ingredients:

makes about 24 skewers

  • one pkg. of Wild Wood organic sprouted tofu (Any organic tofu will do)
  • 1/4 cup of tamari
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp. sambal
  • 1/2 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds (or white)
  • one recipe peanut sauce (recipe follows)

Drain and remove tofu from the package. Cut it into long rectangular strips, 6 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm.

The marinade:

Combine 1/4 cup tamari, 1/4 cup rice vinegar, 1 tsp. sesame oil, and 1 tsp. sambal in large shallow baking dish. Stir to combine.

Arrange the tofu strips in the marinade in a single layer. Allow to sit for two hours, turning the strips a few times to ensure that the tofu absorbs lots of the marinade.

Preheat your oven to 400 F.

Combine arrowroot and black or white sesame seeds on a plate.

Roll each tofu slice in the arrowroot to coat all sides.

Arrange arrowroot coated tofu strips on a very well oiled cookie sheet in a single layer. Make sure that the strips are not touching as they will stick! Bake for 25 min., turning the slices every 8 min. or so until all sides are crisp and browned.

To serve, thread each strip of tofu onto a long skewer. Arrange on a platter with a big bowl of peanut sauce. (recipe follows)

Peanut Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup of organic peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp. finely grated ginger
  • 3 Tbsp. maple syrup
  • 3 Tbsp. tamari
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 1/4 tsp. red chilli flakes
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped cilantro to garnish

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.

Whisk over medium heat until it comes together as a smooth, creamy sauce. Simmer for a few minutes until it thickens slightly. It will continue to thicken as it cools. Remove from heat. Top with freshly chopped cilantro. Serve with tofu sate!
